Fat leather sketchbooks and upcoming show news

I had a lovely gal from BC ask me to make her a custom leather sketchbook recently, one very similar to the one I made for local Nova Scoria artist Daina Scarola for her Painted Road Project. I really love this style of book, the thickness, the material, the weight… It’s inspiring just to hold it. Here are a few shots of the finished book I sent out last week.

She really loved the finished product and hopefully the word will spread and I’ll get to make some more. I think the next one I make will be for myself.

This week I’m getting ready for my second NSDCC Summer Show in Victoria Park here in Halifax. Last year was great despite one rainy day (which oddly enough was my busiest) and I’m sure this year will be even better. I have a few new books I’m pretty stocked on like wine journals, address books, a pregnancy journal and some great wedding albums and guest books that are looking pretty fab. So I’m going to now get off the computer and get to work so I’m not kicking myself in the pants come Thursday.  See you all there!

i can be pretty unobservant….

Gah!

I made a pretty silly mistake on the workshop poster… The date is wrong… Well, wrong in the sense that Thursday the 21st of Feb. in the year 2014 does not exist…. it is supposed to say FRIDAY the 21st.

Oy vey…. Here is the updated poster……….

tibs pop up and other glorious february things

So this past weekend I took the ferry across to Dartmouth to join the Halifax Crafters Society at Two If By Sea cafe for the second Pop-Up Show, this time….in the key of love. A good time was had by all, love was successfully spread in the form of crafty goodness and sweet tunes from CKDU. Here are some photos from the day

Looking forward to the next pop-up!

You don’t know love till you’ve made a book with your sweetheart.

Or read one out loud with.

Or written one together.

This just made me think of that John Waters quote…

shows & news

I am up bright and early getting the last bit of things done before I head down to the Cunard Centre to set up for this years NSDCC Christmas show… Here’s the poster!:

This will be my first time taking part in the Christmas Show and I am thrilled to be there this year. If the summer show was any indication, this is going to be a really fantastic weekend! Looking forward to being blown away by the NSDCC members work and reconnecting with some buds I met in the summertime. Not to mention those amazing volunteers! They are pretty spectacular.

A bit of business news:

Mule Mother Books has been approved for funding through the Canadian Youth Business Foundation (CYBF)! I have painstakingly spent the last few months working on my first business plan and I had never read sweeter words than those that the program officer had sent me after I submitted my plan. “… it was very detailed and I have rarely seen one with that much precision in the information given, well done!”  I was pretty flabbergasted… and proud of myself, a feeling I don’t often allow to come to the surface. But this time, I’m giving myself a pat on the back because I have worked so hard to make and grow this business despite all the negative thoughts, lack of funds, tiny spaces, back aches and whatever else… I am awesome. ok that’s enough of that.

Anyways, this funding is going to make a huge difference in operations and I am feeling super confident about the next year… hooray!

paring down

I’ve been trying to pare down the different variety of books I make in the last few months and in the process have come up with some a few new books (seems counterintuitive, I know….) and got rid of a few others…

For starters, I’ve started making some simple fabric covered perfect bound books. They are super useful and really low commitment. Nice enough that you like calling it your own, but not intimidating to use and mark up with notes. These books have Dur-O-Tone Brown Wrap Paper  from the French Paper Company for the text paper, a little darker than the standard  Dur-O-Tone Aged Newspaper that I use in most of my books. Both are wonderful 100% recycled papers that are lovely to write and draw on, but for these notebooks, I think the brown works perfect. (Also I love that paper and I’ve been wanting to use it on the regular!) So here’s those Perfect Notebooks I’ve been blabbing about…

pocketNOTEBOOKS

The next newest style of Mule Mother Book takes a bit more commitment, is a bit more serious, but is still really simple. The Two-Subject Notebook is covered in leather and keeps you organized with two separate sections to compile your notes into. The pages open flatter than any other book so it’s really comfortable to use.

This next book I am really excited about, as I have been wanting to design one forever. Popping up this holiday season will be one of a kind 2014 Planners! I’ve been working away on the layout and I am just putting the final touches on. 2014 Planner will be available in fabric or cloth bound or leather bound. I’ve also been working on something very awesome incorporating the Two-Subject Notebook and the 2014 Planners… Stay tuned…

The last thing, I’ve kind of just made better, it’s nothing new to Mule Mother, but it’s a crowd fave and it deserved to be better! I’ve re designed the Miniature Books ever-so-slightly and I think they’ve finally reached where they need to be… I plan on making hundreds this holiday season, so they will surely be mastered by New Years…

So, these were just a few highlights of good things to come.  Mule Mother will be next out for the Halifax Pop Explosion Pop Expo record, zine and craft fair in late October. Here’s the poster:

one more thing…

I am moving at the end of this week to a block away into an absolutely beautiful (really, it’s amazing… ) new apartment with my partner and cat, which also means I’ll be packing up Mule Mother for about 2 weeks or so while I move studios and re-organize. Will still be answering emails and such when I can, but will for the most part be shut down.  Will post some photos as soon as I can of the new digs!

collaborations

Recently, my friend Marc of Old Birch Workshop and I did a journal collaboration for a gal who wanted a leather journal for her boyfriend who was embarking on a trip out west.  With our powers combined, we whipped up this lovely little travel journal fitted with the fella’s name and a compass acetone transferred onto the leather… I think it came out pretty sweet!
